Ubiquinol vs Ubiquinone: Which CoQ10 Supplement Is Worth Buying?

You may have seen ubiquinol described as 'active CoQ10' and wondered whether familiar CoQ10 supplements are suddenly old-fashioned. Does a more advanced-sounding name mean a better buy?

Not necessarily. Ubiquinone is the oxidised form of CoQ10, while ubiquinol is the reduced form. Your body can convert between them. Some small human studies have found higher blood CoQ10 levels with certain ubiquinol products, but results vary with the finished formulation. Neither name alone guarantees better energy or health outcomes.

That means the smarter question is what you are getting in the whole capsule. Here is how to look beyond the label.

First, CoQ10 and ubiquinol are not two completely different ingredients

People often search for 'CoQ10 vs ubiquinol', as though these are separate nutrients. In fact, CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is the umbrella name. Ubiquinone and ubiquinol are two forms of it.

Ubiquinone is the oxidised form. Ubiquinol is the reduced form. Inside your body, they change back and forth as CoQ10 helps cells produce energy. In its reduced state, ubiquinol also plays an antioxidant role, helping protect cell components from oxidation.

That is why calling ubiquinol active and ubiquinone inactive misses the point. Both forms are part of normal CoQ10 function, and both have been used in supplements. See our CoQ10 collection for more options. For this comparison, though, the interesting question is what happens after you swallow a particular capsule.

Why does ubiquinol have a reputation for better absorption?

There is genuine research behind that reputation. In 2018, researchers studied ten older men who took 200 mg a day of either ubiquinol or ubiquinone during separate two-week periods. It was a randomised crossover study, meaning the men tried both forms under the study conditions.

The ubiquinol supplement produced a greater rise in total CoQ10 measured in their blood. That finding helped build ubiquinol's reputation.

But it was a small, short study involving men only. The researchers were measuring CoQ10 status, not whether participants found it easier to get through the day or noticed better health. A higher blood concentration tells us something about absorption; it does not promise a noticeable improvement for every person who takes that form.

Then why did another study find that formulation mattered so much?

A 2020 study gives this story an important twist. Researchers compared three finished CoQ10 preparations in 21 adults aged 65 to 74: a standard ubiquinone capsule, a ubiquinol capsule and a specially formulated water-soluble preparation. Each supplied the equivalent of 100 mg CoQ10 as a single dose.

The water-soluble preparation showed significantly greater measured bioavailability than the standard ubiquinone capsule. The ubiquinol capsule also produced a higher measured result, but its advantage over standard ubiquinone was not statistically significant in that study.

Neither study included Gold Health Super Q10, and neither proves that one form always wins. Together, they make a helpful point: the way a finished supplement carries and delivers CoQ10 can change the absorption result.

The part customers often overlook is what carries the CoQ10

CoQ10 is fat soluble, which means it mixes with fats and oils far more readily than with water. The capsule must still release CoQ10 for absorption.

Oil carriers and other ways of preparing CoQ10 may help with that process. Research reviews explain why formulation and solubility deserve attention, although one oil-based capsule cannot be assumed to absorb as well as another. No carrier can guarantee how much CoQ10 any one person will absorb.

This is one reason we are pleased to offer our Super Q10 in an oil-based capsule using Q-Sorb CoQ10. We want you to know more than a form name when you are deciding what to take home.

Why the oil-based Q-Sorb formula matters in our Super Q10

Our Super Q10 Co Enzyme Q10 is a focused CoQ10 supplement for adults interested in everyday cellular energy and antioxidant nutritional support. Each capsule provides 160 mg Q-Sorb Co Enzyme Q10. That is a clear amount per capsule.

We use the branded Q-Sorb formulation, which we describe as highly bioavailable, and we pair it with soy oil in an oil-based capsule. The carrier matters for a fat-soluble ingredient, although we do not claim our capsule has beaten ubiquinol in a clinical trial.

If you want a detailed explanation of milligram labels, our article on what different CoQ10 strengths really mean goes further. That amount is not a dose recommendation.

Our directions are one to two capsules daily with food, or as professionally prescribed. We offer 60-capsule and 180-capsule bottles, so you can consider which size suits your planned use. For more help with the food direction, see when to take CoQ10 with food.

Our currently displayed ingredient wording identifies Q-Sorb CoQ10 but does not specify whether its chemical form is ubiquinone or ubiquinol. We do not guess from the trademark. What we can confidently offer is the stated CoQ10 amount, the Q-Sorb formulation, the oil-based carrier and straightforward options for everyday use.

So is ubiquinol worth paying extra for?

Possibly, if a particular product has evidence or features you value. The 2018 study is a fair reason to be interested in the reduced form. There is no need to dismiss ubiquinol just because other preparations have also performed well in absorption research.

But the word 'active', or a higher price, does not establish that a finished supplement will produce better everyday results. Prices, capsule ingredients and the evidence behind each formulation can differ considerably. A premium-sounding label is not the same thing as a proven benefit you will notice.

We believe our Super Q10 deserves a place in that conversation. With 160 mg Q-Sorb CoQ10 per capsule, an oil-based format and two bottle sizes, it offers concrete features you can assess. Look beyond the form name to ingredients and directions.

When Super Q10 makes sense as an everyday CoQ10 option

If you are interested in CoQ10 for its normal role in cellular energy production and antioxidant support, our Super Q10 is a straightforward product to explore. It keeps the focus on CoQ10 itself, rather than asking you to interpret a long list of unrelated ingredients.

You know the amount in each capsule, and the with-food direction is easy to understand. You also have a choice between a 60-capsule bottle and a 180-capsule bottle. That flexibility is useful whether you are considering a first purchase or choosing a size for continued use. Follow label directions or individual professional advice.

Our Q-Sorb CoQ10, oil-based carrier and bottle options are worth a closer look. See whether Super Q10 suits you.

Medicines and allergies matter more than the label debate

Before starting any CoQ10 supplement, check whether it suits your medicines and circumstances. Do not take our Super Q10 with warfarin without medical advice. CoQ10 may also interact with insulin and may not be compatible with some cancer treatments. If you take prescribed medicines, are receiving active treatment, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have surgery planned, ask your pharmacist, GP or treating team first.

Our formula contains soy oil, so anyone with a soy allergy or other reason to avoid soy should check suitability before buying. CoQ10 does not replace a prescribed statin or reliably treat statin-related muscle symptoms; see our advice on CoQ10 and statin medicines. Persistent or unexplained tiredness also deserves proper assessment. This article is general information, not personalised medical advice.

Common questions about ubiquinol and ubiquinone

Is ubiquinol better than ubiquinone?

Not for everyone. Some small human studies found higher blood CoQ10 after particular ubiquinol supplements, while other comparisons showed that the finished formulation matters. No form is universally superior for absorption or everyday health outcomes. The product's ingredients and your individual needs both count.

Is CoQ10 the same as ubiquinol?

CoQ10 is the broader substance. Ubiquinol is its reduced form, while ubiquinone is its oxidised form. Your body can convert between them. So when you see 'CoQ10 vs ubiquinol', you are not really looking at two completely unrelated nutrients.

Does ubiquinol absorb better than ubiquinone?

It has done so in some small human studies, including a trial in older men. But another trial in older adults found that a specially formulated preparation had the stronger measured result, with no statistically significant ubiquinol advantage over the standard ubiquinone capsule. Formulation matters.

Which form of CoQ10 is best for adults over 60?

Age alone does not decide that. Either form may be worth considering, depending on the particular product, its formulation, medicines, allergies and what you want from a supplement. If you are unsure, a pharmacist or GP can help you assess suitability rather than choosing solely by age.

What makes Gold Health Super Q10 worth considering?

Our Super Q10 gives you 160 mg Q-Sorb CoQ10 in each oil-based capsule containing soy oil. We provide clear with-food directions and a choice of 60 or 180 capsules. It is a focused option for everyday cellular energy and antioxidant nutritional support without a promise of guaranteed results.

Is Gold Health Super Q10 ubiquinone or ubiquinol?

Our currently displayed ingredient wording identifies 160 mg Q-Sorb Co Enzyme Q10 per capsule but does not establish which of those two forms it contains. If knowing the exact chemical form is important to you, please contact Gold Health for confirmation before choosing.

Choose the CoQ10 supplement that makes sense for you

Ubiquinol and ubiquinone are two forms of the same CoQ10 system. Both deserve a fair look, and studies remind us that the finished formulation can matter as much as the form name. A premium label is not the whole answer.

We are proud to offer a clear, focused option in our Super Q10: 160 mg Q-Sorb CoQ10 per capsule, an oil-based format and simple with-food directions, with two bottle sizes to choose from. If you are ready to explore CoQ10 nutritional support, see whether our formula and options are a good fit for you.
